Bucks Gazette, 16 June 1832

Aylesbury Magistrates' Court 9th. June, 1832.
Thomas Budd, Samuel Robins and George Daniels, three young lads of Winslow were brought up for re-examination on a charge of burglary. Mr. Daniel Grace of Winslow stated that at a late hour on Saturday night last or early Monday morning his dwelling house was broken open and a quantity of bacon stolen therefrom. Suspecting the prisoners, who absconded, he followed them in company with Mr. Lomath and apprehended them at Aston Clinton on Monday ... Budd had some bacon in a bag. The others were with him. He could identify one of the pieces and produced a piece of bacon from which it had been cut and it corresponded exactly. There were other pieces of bacon in the bag which he believed to be his property but he could not swear to them. He lost more than was found in the bag. Thomas Lomath, constable, corroborated Grace's evidence and produced the bacon found on Budd. The prisoners said in defence that they had found the bacon by the side of the road between Little Horwood and Shipton. They were committed to the assizes.

Notes

Daniels, who may have been suffering from cholera was tried later and also sentenced to death. These sentences were later commuted to transportation, in Robins' case thanks to the petition below which was signed by all Winslow's leading inhabitants. Budd sailed on the ship Mangles on 8 Dec 1833. Robins sailed on the ship Neva on 27 July 1833. There is no trace of Daniels' sailing.

Thomas Lomath was the constable, normally an amateur position at this date but he may have been employed. Daniel Grace's school was at Brook Hall, Sheep Street in 1832.
